GAUDI

I am a fan of Guadí. Barcelona wasn't the same without his works. We have to thank him nearly all our tourists, (especially in the case of japanese tourists) and that Barcelona is internationally regarded as a modern cosmopolitan city. We have a big duty with him. I have seen all his works in Spain and they are great. My favourite is Sagrada Familia because I made my "Practicum" there as a trainee in tourist information department. I met really beautiful people (greetings for them too!! especially for Xose, Eva, Raquel, Miriam, Guille and Gerlac if they ever read this!). I will give you more information about this temple, which Gaudí began to built as "people's cathedral". Take care! Lydia --------------------------------- Antoni Gaudí i Cornet The church of the Sagrada Familia by Antonio Gaudí(1852-1926), is undoubtedly one of Barcelona's must-see landmarks. The unfinished masterpiece has become a symbol of this vibrant Spanish city, but we should not n...

CARNIVAL

Hi buddies! How are you? Hope everything is going fine. I left you here something interesting to read about. It's about Germany, about the region where is was living during 6 months (I know, it is not a great time, but better than nothing). Regretfully, I was never there for Carnival. I was on Notting Hill's Carnival in London on 2005 instead. Well, I hope ypu enjoy this article. Lots of love, Lydia -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Karnevalszeit When you hear the word 'carnival' in the English-speaking world, it's probably more likely to be associated with Rio rather than with Germany. Yet in some German regions there are many customs and festivals associated with 'carnival'-and there are quite a few days off work. For many people, carnival is the one occasion in the year when they trul...

GLOBAL ENGLISH

Hi again! I just realize, I did not write anything last week. I am reading this "strange" book called "White teeth" and I think it will drive me crazy! It is a terrific story, but completely surrealistic! Ok, that is not mine, but I hope you find it worths to read about it. It is not really necessary to say, I prefer reading than writing (my better mark in English is usually reading comprehension). Take care! Lydia ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ English is spoken as a first language by more than 300 million people throughout the world, and used as a second language by many millions more. One in five of the world's population speaks English with a good level of competence, and within the next few years the number of people speaking English as a second language will exceed the number of native speakers. This could have a dramatic effect on the evolution of the language: in the process of being absor...

PROFICENCY...AGAIN!

I think I am crazy. Today I made an incription for CPE in June. Yes, I will make this exam again. The first time I made it was on 13 th December 2007, I was ill and the results were terribly bad. This time I hope to get a better mark (at least C). I have to prepare this exam completely alone and the worst thing for me is writing and speaking. I usually see films in English. Grammar it is not so difficult, but you I need to practice again because I forgot a lot. My vocabulary is terrible and I always have problems with "connectors", "phrasal verbs" and using the right tense. I don't know. I just think I am very nervous. I will do my best, but maybe I am not still ready for it and the worse is that 80% the candidates are younger than me (just 16 or 17 years old!!). At least, they were that time when I took up this exam. It was like a nightmare; completely alone there, among teens and feeling completely sick. Wish me luck, because I will need it! Hugs and kisses, ...

History of English

Hello buddies! How are you doing? I have found this interesting article on the website "askoxford" and, of course, I would like to share it with all of us. I hope you like it. Take care!! Five Events that Shaped the History of English Philip Durkin, Principal etymologist at the Oxford English Dictionary, chooses five events that shaped the English Language. The Anglo-Saxon Settlement It's never easy to pinpoint exactly when a specific language began, but in the case of English we can at least say that there is little sense in speaking of the English language as a separate entity before the Anglo-Saxons came to Britain. Little is known of this period with any certainty, but we do know that Germanic invaders came and settled in Britain from the north-western coastline of continental Europe in the fifth and sixth centuries. The invaders all spoke a language that was Germanic (related to what emerged as Dutch, Frisian, German and the Scandinavian languages, and to Gothic), bu...

For Felicity and my classmates

Hello to everybody! Here is my blog. Well, to tell you the truth I am not really inspired right now. I would like to delight you with a poem or a beautiful prose like Shakespeare, Goethe or our admired Cervantes. I regret, but now I am not in the mood. Hopefully my English will be better by the next time. In fact, English has always being my favourite foreign language. You can communicate and have contact with anyone in the world if you speak this "global" language. And I adore this possibility; no frontiers, no barriers for knowing another cultures, people and countries. I think you enjoy more your life being open-minded. You can learn a lot from another people and you can show some positive aspects of your culture too. I think we are not so different from "them". We are all human beings; we have all similar dreams and aims in our lifes. Everyone wants to be happy, do what he or she likes (and do better), offer the world her or his best and have truly emotional exp...
